The month of November is a great time to develop a gratitude practice. With Thanksgiving on the horizon, the spirit of the season seems to set the tone for gratitude.
This blog series, #30DaysofGratitude, hopes to share bits of gratitude and create an awareness of how gratitude can change our mindset.
Every day this month, I, along with other writers, teachers and friends, will post about all things gratitude. Come along for the ride and let me know what you are most grateful for every day – I know we can inspire one another.
It seems every few weeks like clockwork, I get a call from my kid’s daycare. One of the twins vomited. Or has diarrhea. Or a fever. Or is leading the Toddler Rebellion demanding more cheese in the mac and cheese. I sometimes think they just call to get the kid-to-teacher ratio down a bit.
But you know, it could be much worse.
The saddest thing I’ve ever see was Amazing Stories Episode 19: Without Diana An elderly couple have never stopped believing that their daughter, who went missing in the woods 40 years ago, will somehow appear to them one last time before they die. I double dog dare you to watch that episode.
In 1946, during the Easter picnic and egg hunt, eight-year-old Diana has a fight with her loving father who has just returned from World War II. She’s been holding a grudge against him for years, because she doesn’t understand why he had to leave her several years ago. During the game, she vanishes in the woods. The search party fails to find her and they end up blaming hidden quicksand spots in the woods for the tragedy. 40 years later, her parents are now old and her mother is on her deathbed, but they’re still hoping that they’ll see their little baby girl somehow, even if only for a spell.
WTF Spielberg! Guy goes off to war, lucky enough to come back in one piece. Tries to reconnect with his 8 year old daughter who then disappears (dies). And then he has to live with that for 40 more years. I cannot imagine what that particular iteration of Hell on earth would be like.
So I’m grateful when the call comes in and it’s just that my kids aren’t feeling well (or driving the teachers to bring hip flasks to daycare).
